Teens Art Club
Term 4 2024
8 Week Program
To finish the year, this term Teens will create projects learning techniques in clay sculpture, mixed media and painting. You will be encouraged to exercise your imagination and develop individual ideas. We will take inspiration from how other artists and mother nature have done it!
Week 1
Hybrid Creatures: Clay Coils and Sculpture
Over 3 weeks we will make a sculpture made of clay using coils to build an imaginary/ hybrid creature.
Teens will begin by planning your individual sculpture via drawing and collage to develop an idea of the potential form.
Week 2
Hybrid Creatures: Clay Coils and Sculpture
This week Teens will begin to make your individual imagined hybrid creature. We will practice coil hand building techniques to develop the 3D form.
Week 3
Hybrid Creatures: Clay Coils and Sculpture
This week Teens will finish making your individual sculptures. When complete they will be left to dry and hopefully fired for the end of term to take home and enjoy.
Week 4
Shapeshifters: Mixed media: Exploring Ink
Over 3 weeks we will create an artwork using ink, oil pastel and watercolour. We will introduce a new material each week, experimenting and ‘playing’ with each material on smaller ‘postcard’ artworks for practice.
Each week we will investigate the phenomena of natural shapeshifters, beginning week 4 with the incredible octopus! This week we will work with ink.
Week 5
Shapeshifters: Mixed media: Exploring Oil Pastel
Each week we will investigate the phenomena of natural shapeshifters, week 5 the magical Nautilus! This week we will work with oil pastel.
Week 6
Shapeshifters: Mixed media: Exploring Watercolour
Each week we will investigate the phenomena of natural shapeshifters, week 6 the astonishing jellyfish! This week we will work with watercolour.
If time we will explore a shapeshifting palimpsest using a mix of ink, oil pastel and watercolour.
Week 7
Acrylic Landscape Painting inspired by Sidney Nolan
Teens will create a landscape painting using acrylic paint on canvas. Selecting 3 images from Sidney Nolan’s oeuvre used to inspire you to create an Australian landscape from your imagination, perhaps using Australian folklore or current newsworthy stories [for example: koala habitats and logging] to develop a unique composition.
This week we will select images, discuss, plan, sketch and start our underpainting on canvas.
Week 8
Acrylic Landscape Painting inspired by Sidney Nolan
This week Teens will develop and finish their unique Australian landscape painting.
If time you will paint your fired hybrid creatures ready to take home and enjoy.
Note
Please supply and apron or art shirt. Particularly when we are using acrylic paints. These protect your clothes!
Sketch book
I intend that this course supports the students own creative journey. They should each bring a small sketch book with them, to record and develop their own ideas, dream up their own projects, and practice drawing. Sometimes in the process of art making there is waiting time, perhaps waiting for something to dry, or to take turns in using a particular process or piece of equipment. During these times the student can be using their sketch book.
